Computers - Cell Phones - Telemarketers - Thoughts By Carl Hurley
We have made some great steps in innovation when it comes to computers, cell phones, and even telemarketers. With computers we have gone from having a computer that will take up a whole floor of an office building to one that is so small it could fit in our backpack, and some can fit in our back pocket (although you have to be careful not to sit down while its still back there).
Cell phones have come a long way as well. I still remember the ones that had a receiver the size of half a phone book. It looked like an enlarged version of a G.I. Joe combat phone. And to really show your high level of societal status you could have the thing bolted to the floor board of your car. It even had its own separate battery (about the size of your car battery) so that you could talk on the phone as you drove....for $10 per minute. Now they are about the size of a wallet. They even can have the same amount of computing power as your computer at home. There are even cell phone lockers that can get to keep your cell phones safe. Unless you own a business where all your employees have a company cell phone you are probably not going to have your own cell phone storage locker, but you can still get one you wish. A business friend of mine owns several cell phone lockers because his business is expanding, and he says they are well worth the money for the piece of mind they give you when you have to manage several cell phones at one time.
In regards to telemarketers, once upon a time you had to have a real person make a telemarketing call. Now, you can plug in a computer, and have an auto-dialer dial the phone for you. And in some cases, you can have a computer that can simulate a person talking on the phone. That version is a bit scary.
In the video below Carl Hurley talks about some of the things that scared / surprised him when he first started using his computer, such as when his computer caught a virus, and it affected every other electrical appliance in the house. He also finally got a cell phone, and it has been an adventure in and of itself.
