Clicker and Facebook - A Winning and Combination

I was checking out an article in the New York Times regarding Clicker.com using Facebook's instant personalization service to better personalize choices given to people that use Clicker.com

Basically, Clicker.com is a guide to tv shows, movies, etc. that you can watch online. You can also vote on which items that you love (or don't), and these votes helps the site to better suggest to you things that you might want to watch. By integrating Facebook, Clicker.com would also be able to let your friends on Facebook know what you like with a technology called Clicker Predict that is an algorithm that takes in various factors (around 50) to figure out shows that you might like.

I think this is a pretty cool idea. Although my friends, and I may like different shows in general, there are bound to be shows that we all like. Plus, by being able to see some shows that my friends like that I haven't heard of, it opens up some possibilities of developing a new found love for new stuff on the internet. Not to mention the possible viral effect this could have for some shows if several people start clicking the "like it" button.

My only concern is that some marketers might take advantage of it. I know some sweepstakes for certain product fan pages on Facebook will only let you enter if you "like" their fan page. Now don't get me wrong. I probably would not be interested in entering a sweepstakes for a product that I didn't like, but there are some products I like, and then there are products I LOVE. But then again, maybe I'm reading too much into it. In a world where I've been asked by someone that I met in a forum if I would like to become BFFs, perhaps its understood that liking something doesn't mean necessarily that I love that item. It just means that I at least have an interest in it. And the things that I like may become the things that someone else loves.

Either way, this whole thing could really help to guide people to interesting online tv choices. Not to mention, there are lots of things on youtube that I would be interesting in watching, but have never heard of. Perhaps Clicker.com using Facebook technology would help to inform me more of what's out there on the internet. Only time will tell.
